“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”
― Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own
And that’s true if a woman is to write non-fiction, paint landscapes and build a garden, too. Thankfully, the room might just be in a barn… and a great deal of money isn’t always necessary.
We converted half of the barn space into a studio in 2014, and it’s a comfortable and warm haven for imagination and creation. I can see the field and trees from the east window, and laugh at the chickens’ antics from the north one. There are dog beds and guitars. Sometimes I hear Merlin the barn cat chasing an unwelcome creature in the attic above, and the hum of the water pump behind the west wall is a comforting sound of home.
The space in which we make art in is important. It is an integral part of the creative process, a safe and personal home where the mind can run unleashed and the hands can fly unfettered.
I feel very fortunate to have such a place of my own.
