I think that the humble mason jar is probably one of the most used items in our house.
Of course, canning season is here, and we’re lining up our jars for storing jams, jellies, chutneys and pickled everything…but we use them for so much more than that. They’re lanterns, cocktail shakers, flower vases, seed sprouters, soap dispensers and canisters. Now that we have a Bulk Barn in our area, we’re also using them instead of plastic bags for dry good shopping.
With summer snacking season here, we’re also using mason jars of different heights and sizes as lovely outdoor snack servers. They keep things like nuts, pretzels and crackers sealed from air, humidity and picnic ants, and the narrow mouthed jars encourage pouring rather than dipping. By attaching a variety of decorative cupboard knobs to the metal jar lids, they look so fabulous…that even good old Martha would be proud.
