I‘ve been doing quite a lot of quiet work these days.
As you may know, our Molly dog has had a challenging recovery to her most recent surgery on March 2nd. As a result, her activities have been severely restricted and she’s been confined to her bed for much of the past few weeks while healing. Needless to say…she doesn’t like it. What she does like, though, is if I’m sitting quietly to comfort her. When you put on one of these soft garments, you will feel the comfort and love that was knitted into every stitch.
My challenge these past weeks was to find a productive use of this gentle time, and the answer was provided when my mom asked me to knit a short shawl for her. It was a joy to create, and the pattern proved to be so easy to wear and wonderful to look at, that I decided to make a few more to offer in my shop. And thus…the Coastal Capelet project was born.
These unique and easy to wear short shawls are each handknit with a soft and durable wool/acrylic blend and fastened with artisan buttons made by talented Canadian designers. One of the artists that I’ve particularly loved collaborating with is Lorrie of Mad For Mud Buttons. Her work is whimsical, beautiful and skillfully executed.
Each capelet is double knit in a bicolour ombre design, in neutral shades selected to reflect the west coast landscape. Fitting a size 6 to 16, each measures 15″ from neck to mid back, can quickly and easily be pulled on over the head, and the springy garter stitch creates a fit that clings to the shoulders without restricting movement. A hands-free and beautiful way to keep warm in any season.
If you’re a fan of the Outlander series, you might recognize this pattern! It is based on the Wilmington shawl that Brianna wore in season four of the hit TV series, made famous by its passionate…woolens!
My initial launch of this design includes five lovely, west coast-inspired colourways. I have a few more gorgeous colours up my sleeve though…and you can expect to see a few more options added as the month of April progresses.
