It feels like we’ve been waiting forever, but today we’ve seen real signs of spring. The first of our crocus flowers opened, the honeybees were buzzing around checking out what might be available to snack on, and we seeded five trays of early vegetables in the greenhouse.
Spinach, bok choi, mescluns, arugula and chard like the cool weather, and we start them in the greenhouse to protect the new shoots from being eaten by the birds and bugs. In a few weeks they’ll be nice strong little plants, and will be better able to defend themselves out in the beds. Each tray has a cloche cover with venting, so we can give them lots of air circulation in the daytime, and warmth overnight.
