The rabbits have had a hard time of it this winter, as there has been more snow staying on the ground than any previous winter on record. They don’t seem to have suffered in the social department though, as there are already little ones hopping around.
A family of 15 bunnies might end up as 2 or 3 adults, with a little care and a whole lot of luck. Between the racoons, eagles, hawks…and Merlin, our resident barn cat, the odds are stacked against longevity. Life is tough for a foraging ground dweller, and that’s why they multiply so quickly.
Nature has a way of taking care of things, and animals have developed amazing adaptations to ensure their species’ survival.
