Before we started raising chickens, I really had no idea how interesting and funny they really are. They’re friendly, fiesty and thoroughly entertaining. We have four sets of two, in four different breeds, and not only is each breed very different in their egg type, they are also very different in their personalities.
Mariah and Whitney are our Ameraucanas, Thelma and Louise our Rhode Island Reds, Gloria and Bianca our Columbians and Wilma our Plymouth Barred Rock. Sadly, we lost Betty to a predator last summer. Because of the many predators on the ground and in the sky, our flock is kept in an enclosed run, with a heated coop that they retire to in the evening.
You can’t beat having fresh eggs every day, and watching the ladies sunning themselves on their perches and admiring themselves in the mirrors is a great way to spend time.
You can read about our flock throughout the year in the Hen Den part of my blog HERE.
