Is there anything more satisfying than eating food that you’ve seeded, tended and harvested yourself?
I don’t think so.
A potager is a French term for an ornamental vegetable or kitchen garden. The historical design precedent is from the Gardens of the French Renaissance and Baroque Garden à la française eras. Often edible and non-edible flowers and herbs are planted with the vegetables to enhance the garden’s beauty. When I work in the garden, I imagine Provence.
We work in our food garden twelve months a year, and it rewards us with a bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Depending on the season, we grow diverse salad leaves, seven types of berries, fruit trees, seven varieties of grapes, a wide assortment of vegetables and enough garlic to last all year long. A cold frame greenhouse allows us to start seeds early, push the growing season longer and grow hot climate specialties that are not typically available in our area.
You can read about what’s happening throughout the year in the Potager part of my blog HERE.
How wonderful it is to have an ever-changing source of fresh food and creativity just steps from the back door!
